Don’t sell the potential client what they don’t really need
Think of it like this, you walk into a restaurant and order something to eat. The waiter tells you that the food you have ordered is not what you need, but instead recommends something more expensive and containing more courses. What follows is irritation and bafflement that the waiter thinks that you are not capable of figuring out what you would like to eat. This is the same situation a client finds themselves in when they realize that their potential digital agency thinks that they are not capable of knowing what exactly they want. True, there are some situations where the client truly needs guidance and understanding of what is best for them, but selling them a service just because it will make more money for you, in the long run, is a big no-no.
Understand your audience
Maintain the balance between patronising and mind-numbingly boring when it comes to explaining your workings to your client. Do a little bit of research prior to meeting them to gauge their level of understanding and knowledge. If this information is not available online, simply asking for a brief introduction will do as well.
Don’t be too critical
As any good digital marketing institute will teach you, causing discomfort and embarrassment to your client is certainly not the way ahead. After all, no one likes to be told that everything that they have been doing so far is wrong, especially when you could be in the presence of people who may have sanctioned those campaigns in the first place. It can cause internal problems and an angry customer is not going to be beneficial for your digital marketing company. Therefore, be respectful and don’t be eager to point out all the faults at once.
Do pick your battles
Here’s something that a good digital media institute will teach you, know when to back off. If your client says that a certain campaign or strategy is not possible due to their internal guidelines, red tape or any other potential reasons, listen to them and back off. Find a solution that works for all and take that ahead. Same applies while cold calling potential clients. Don’t spoil your name in the industry by being that person who is annoyingly persistent. If they have said no once or twice, chances are that third time won’t be the charm.
